So I came up to Edinburgh for New Years/Hogmanay. My cousin and some of her friends rented a flat and I tagged along.
It's pretty sweet.
For Hogmanay there was a big party in the street and concerts and stuff but we ended up drinking here until like 10.30 which is when we realised that there was no entry to the party after 11... Luckily we are pretty close to town so we started walking and it was all fine until I rolled my ankle.
Apparently it was pretty spectacular, I mean it sounds like I rolled it, fell into some kind of metal bus shelter then stunt rolled along the footpath to end up sitting upright outside what I think was a pub where some guys were standing outside smoking. Real great.
I managed to get up eventually and hobble along the road so we got to the party just before they locked the gates. Then everyone made me go the the first aid area and they iced and strapped it for me and I had a real good chat to some Scottish people/saw a guy who was in a way worse state than me/assured them I hadn't taken any drugs/impressed them with stories of all the other times I fallen over in my life and ended up with scabs on my chin (including last time I was in Edinburgh! Cursed maybe?).
I escaped at about 11.30, after promising not to walk around on it too much, and found my people in time for the countdown and the fireworks and the Auld Lang Syne singing.
I found these photos on my phone:
I then proceeded to wander around Edinburgh for a good 3 hours.
I'm not entirely sure of everything that happened but I did ask at least one Scotsman what he was wearing under his kilt. One of us ended up in the gutter with a smashed phone. We stole a novelty Scottish hat off a blow up doll in a pub, and got chased by someone who was unhappy about this. I rolled my ankle at least one more time walking along Princess Street.
Met lots of people who also claimed to be from Wellington. Stopped my cousins friend stealing about 50 peoples hats, including at least 3 Police people. Went into maybe 3 convenience stores trying to find frozen peas with no luck and then finally made friends with the guys and the kebab place around the corner and bought garlic bread with cheese which turned out to be one of the best things I have ever eaten in my life.
By the end of the night my ankle looked like this:
And I'm working on some pretty good looking bruises right now.
Yesterday we just hung around here and watched movies.
Today everyone else has gone to do touristy things like Edinburgh Castle but I've been there already so I'm not that bummed. Plus I'm watching Music and Lyrics so that is pretty much ideal. I will definitely have Pop goes my Heart in my head for the next 5 days.
This is the view I have out the window:
I wish that park was covered in snow.
